Surely the Politicians are Grass

November 7, 2020 ()

In Isaiah 40 the voice of God said to cry out that "All flesh is grass" (v. 6) and again, "Surely the people are grass" (v. 7). All flesh is like grass in that it is transitory and very temporary– “here today – gone tomorrow.”

Isaiah 40:7 (NKJV)
7 The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.

The wind is here pictured as an elemental manifestation of the LORD’s breath. Just as the hot east winds would quickly wither the flowers so likewise “surely the people are grass” (cf. 40:24; Jer. 4:1). God sovereignly “blows” on us and we quickly fade away. Note the emphasis here on God’s sovereign activity regarding the brevity of our time here. In context the emphasis would seem to be that the Assyrians and the coming Babylonian oppressors are going to quickly fade from the scene of human history. Their moment of glory is only for a moment and then they fade into oblivion. This would be a great comfort to the people of God being oppressed by these Gentile world powers.

Name the human powers that be. Name the infamous leaders in place today. They are all very temporary – quickly passing from the scene. They have their moment in the sun and then “the breath of the LORD” blows upon them and they are gone (cf. Ps. 37:1-2; 90:1-6, 9-12; 102:11; 103:15-18; Ja. 1:10-11; 1 Pet. 1:23-25).

Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)
8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

While the grass withers and the flower fades, the Word of our God stands forever! Somebody say, "HALLELUJAH!" People are fleeting, but the Word of the living God endures. The promises of God continue.

The truth of the passing frailty of man is bracketed by MESSIANIC PROMISES - GOD'S WORD regarding the Messianic future. Just before emphasizing the fleeting moment of human "glory" the LORD had this to say in relation to the coming Messiah.

Isaiah 40:5 (NKJV)
5 The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Oh GLORY! - Bring the GLORY! And we have the sure enduring Word of God on it, "The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and ALL flesh shall see it together". And just to make sure we get it, the inspired Scripture says, "For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." And then on the other side of emphasizing human frailty the MESSIANIC theme continues.

Isaiah 40:9–10 (NKJV)
9 O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
10 Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.

The message is that Messiah God is coming to rule and care for His own. These are “good tidings” of comfort! Isaiah 40 begins with the words, "COMFORT, yes comfort My people!" This where the COMFORT of God's people is found - not in the strength of human regimes - not in some political or military power, but in the GOOD NEWS of this coming kingdom reign of the MESSIAH! The message is this: “Behold your God!” People are a downer. They are transient and passing. Don’t put your hope in flesh, rather “Behold your God!” And the context shows that this God is the Messiah (Jesus) Who comes to rule. He is the one through Whom the “glory of the LORD shall be revealed” as seen in verse 5.

The message is to take your eyes off mere flesh which like grass quickly withers and fades away. Instead, “Behold your God!” And specifically, this God is the coming Messiah. This is Jesus! Put your eyes on Him! This is where lasting COMFORT is found. It’s found in an eternal perspective focused on God’s enduring Word and on looking to the Lord Jesus Christ. This promise of comfort and restoration is SURE. The glory of the LORD shall be revealed to all flesh – and this truth stands forever – for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it!

In Isaiah 2 we have a vision of the coming kingdom and the Day of the LORD judgment that will usher it in. In the Day of the LORD Isaiah 2 repeatedly says, that in that day the lofty ego of humanity will be HUMBLED.

Isaiah 2:11 (NKJV)
11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

Isaiah 2:17 (NKJV)
17 The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; The LORD alone will be exalted in that day,

Isaiah 2 ends with this challenge:

Isaiah 2:22 (NKJV)
22 Sever yourselves from such a man, Whose breath is in his nostrils; For of what account is he?

The NASB says, “Stop regarding man”. The HCSB says, “Put no more trust in man”. Sever yourselves from such a man; that is a PROUD man who thinks he can get by without God; who seeks to operate independent of God; who puts His trust in idolatrous things. Sever yourselves from such a man “Whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?”

Who does puny man think he is? To put your stock in man and all his supposed resources is folly. The strongest of men is but ONE breath away from total inability. “Of what account is he?” In the end he can do NOTHING to help you! He can’t even help himself! The call is for people to STOP depending on human strength and to put their trust in YHWH Who alone is GREAT and Who alone is to be exalted. Don’t idolatrously put your stock in earthly might or that which mankind prides himself in.

I submit to you, THE POLITICIANS ARE ALL GRASS - OF WHAT ACCOUNT ARE THEY?

In this hour consider the reality of GRASS - not to smoke it - but rather than ALL flesh (including ALL politicians) are grass! Sever all trust in mere air breathers and put your faith in the eternal Almighty God. People come and go - they are fleeting but the WORD OF OUR GOD SHALL STAND FOREVER!
